Task#10 Summary
Finally finished!
I really enjoyed the Betty Blogger Web 2.0 course and would definitely recommend it to anyone. The self directed learning was easy to follow. I wasn't able to make it in for any of the tutorial sessions, perhaps next year there could be more advanced notice of the dates and times, but if I required any assistance I know there were many helpers just a quick email away.
The most challenging part of the program was finding the time to sit and read and thoroughly learn about each application. Some of the tasks just skimmed the surface and didn't go into the full extent of the application's many uses. The Betty Blogger program is an excellent introduction course to Web 2.0 applications and the book and website references provided with each task will help with any further education. If I can find the time!
The course surpassed my expectations and I learned many new things that I would never had found out about on my own. Some applications I had never even heard of before! I would even consider taking the course again in the future because the Internet and it's many applications are constantly evolving and thus the tasks in the program will change as well.
Thank you Library Lady and helper, and the Burlington Public Library for a job well done!

Task#9 librarything
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/SJR123
Wow! It actually worked! I posted a widget!
Library thing seems interesting and I may use it in the future for book recommendations. I noticed you are limited to 200 titles in your library before having to pay for a yearly membership. I'm sure I could fill that easily if I sat down and really thought about all the books I have read over the past few years. I guess there is nothing stoping you from opening multiple accounts or only entering your favorite books.

Task#8 RSS feeds
This was another new experience for me. I added subscriptions to MacLean's magazine, The Globe and Mail business and the recommended knitting feeds. Lots of reading!
I was using the mobile version of the site on my ipad2 and found it easy to search and add subscriptions. I need to spend more time navigating the site and perhaps the desktop version will be more user friendly for learning how to remove subscriptions.
I look forward to trying out an RSS and will be more aware of it as a posible option on websites in the future.

Task# 7 Wikis
I will be bringing sunshine salad to our picnic.
This Wiki experience is a first for me. I was not certain where I was suposed the write the dish I was bringing to the picnic. At first I edited the main page, as outlined in our homework instructions, but then on the 'view' screen I noticed that everyone was following the LibraryLady's example and posting comments to the document. Which way is correct?
Wikis seem like they could be helpful for organizing events, but only if everyone involved knows what to do with them. I may use them in the future.

task #5 Picasa
The picasa photo of 'blue flower' was one in over 49000 results. That is a lot of photos of blue flowers!
The tags assigned to the picture were; flowers, jacob's ladder, pwa-floral favourites6, screensaver, and trandescantia.
Picasa is really interesting. The face recognition software is a great way to organize your photos and the albums are easy to put together and post on the internet. I will continue to use picasa, but will keep my albums private.

Task# 4 Twitter and Facebook
This was my first experience with twitter. I found the standard version page more user-friendly than the mobile page. I also found searching for people or places/businesses challenging because you really needed to be specific or creative with your search. For example, looking for the store Joelle's located in downtown Burlington, search Joelle's turns up hundreds of girls named Joelle and what they were up to last night, search Joelle's clothing and it turns up in the list as Joelle's Downtown along with many other options.
I don't see myself using Twitter very often after this course, especially not sending tweets, but I will keep my account just in case. I can see the many positive applications Twitter and FaceBook provide people and businesses but I feel the majority of users are just 'tooting their own horn' and I don't have the desire or time to listen to them.

task #3 Diigo
I had never heard of Diigo before and I am really excited about it now that I see all the applications!
Great for compiling lists of websites and articles that you would like to read when you have more time, etc.
I will definitely continue to use Diigo after this course and am planning to add it to my iPad2.
Some of my tags and bookmarked websites so far,
Tag - Books
Bookmarked - Burlington Public Library, Bestsellers List The Globe and Mail, Chapters/Indigo
Tag - Davidcamp
Bookmarked - Muskoka Woods, Camp Muskoka, McMaster University Sports and Recreation

Task#2 - Streaming Happiness
Task #2 took longer than I anticipated, not because of the complexity of the work (the instructions and the embedding video were excellent and straightforward) but because I had difficulty choosing one video from the vast collections in the YouTube universe.
My previous experiences with the web site were mainly for basic entertainment - try http://youtu.be/s13dLaTIHSg (Simon's Cat - TV dinner) but I have also searched for educational purposes - http://youtu.be/s13dLaTIHSg will show you how to correctly execute a long-tale cast-on for knitting.
After pulling myself out of a 'YouTube black hole' - a term my sister brilliantly coined after losing hours if not days watching endless suggested YouTube videos - I chose to share a video about a book I have just finished reading.
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think everyone could benefit from her Secrets of Adulthood ie. You don't have to be good at everything, and her stories about her year long pursuit of becoming happier. Best part - you can get it at the BPL!

I appreciate the many uses of streaming videos, live or not, and will continue to use the 'free' knowledge acquired from YouTube for information, education, and of course entertainment while hopefully avoiding the gravitational pull of the 'black hole'. Maybe just one more suggested video....
